CUBE Tutorial – Attack Magazine (pt 2)

Attack Magazine published a second tutorial using CUBE for multiple layers in a techno track, and we’re loving what it sounds like. A previous tutorial focused on creating a layered pad to serve as the lead melody, showcasing CUBE’s potential to smuggle massive ambient sound design into EDM. This tutorial takes a slightly different approach, using CUBE to flesh out a range of different elements to craft a unique, cinematic techno beat.

The tutorial starts by creating a bassline to lock in with an existing techno drum beat. One of CUBE’s classic bass presets, Bass Thick, is the starting point. The “Dueling Butterflies” Orbit preset adds a fluttering effect to spice things up, and tweaks to intensity and depth dial in the sound even further. We love how the tutorial continues to explore the sonic possibilities, changing one of the sound sources, tweaking its sample playback and envelope, and adding a touch of reverb to finish it up.

With the bass and drums set, an arpeggiated line adds even more rhythmic movement. Starting with one of our quirkier presets, “Beez in Da Cave,” the producers at Attack transform it into a sprocket-like sound by automating the Macro knob position (which interacts with LFO rate in the Modulation matrix) and using the “Slither” Orbit preset. The result is a bubbly sound that bounces with the rhythm of the track.

The mix is completed with a couple interesting harmonic elements. A screeching triad makes use of faster LFO and Orbit settings to stutter in time with the track, while a string-like pad uses pitch automation to create a downer, with automation added to the orbit intensity to add a swirling effect. Overall there are four instances of CUBE working together to add different elements across the full range of the frequency spectrum. Have a listen to the end result here:

Like last week, we’re thrilled to see CUBE put to work like this. It’s incredible witnessing CUBE inspire creative expression across all musical genres but particularly exciting to hear it incorporated into such a wide range of elements in a techno track.
